2023: How to Claim the Disability Tax Credit if Approved

If you’re approved for the disability, claiming the credit is a straightforward process.

To claim the disability tax credit for yourself for the 2023 tax year:

You will want to claim the disability amount of $9,428 on line 31600 of your tax return. Line 31600 is found on the Federal Worksheet (T1).

To transfer your disability tax credit to a dependant, other than a spouse, in 2023:

If you are transferring the disability tax credit to a dependant (other than a spouse), who is 18 or older, you will want to put the disability amount of $9,428 on line 31800.  Line 318 is found on the Federal Worksheet (T1).

To transfer the disability tax credit to a dependent under the age of 18, in 2023:

For someone who is under the age of 18, you will want to add the child supplement of $5,500, for a total on line 31800 of $14,928.

To transfer your disability tax credit to your spouse for 2023:

To transfer your disability tax credits to a spouse, you must complete Federal Worksheet 2 (T1), Federal Amounts Transfereed From Your Spouse of Common-law Partner. You will want to enter your partner’s disability amount (from line 31600) to line 35700 on Federal Worksheet 2 of the T1. The amount of is $9,428.

Medical practitioner fees

If the medical practitioner charged a fee for completing the DTC application or for providing information, you may be able to claim the fee as medical expense on lines 33099 or 33199 of your tax return.
