Are you or a loved one living with diabetes? Did you know that you may be eligible for financial benefits through the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) in Canada? type 1 and type 2 diabetics may qualify. At Disability Tax Service, we are here to help you understand and navigate the process of claiming this valuable tax credit.
Understanding Diabetes and Its Impact
Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels. It can lead to various health complications, including heart disease, kidney problems, and vision issues. Managing diabetes requires constant monitoring, medication, and lifestyle adjustments. The financial burden of managing this condition can be significant, but the Disability Tax Credit can help alleviate some of these challenges.
What is the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)?
The Disability Tax Credit is a non-refundable tax credit provided by the Canadian government. It aims to assist individuals with disabilities, including those living with diabetes, by providing them with financial support. Eligible individuals can reduce their income tax payable by claiming the DTC or even receive a tax refund.
Who is Eligible for the Disability Tax Credit for Diabetes?
Qualifying for the disability tax credit for diabetes is unique because the eligibility criteria differ for the years prior to 2021 and after 2021. 2021 and later, type 1 diabetes is deemed to have met the eligibility criteria and automatically qualifies for the disability tax credit. Type 1 diabetics trying to get approved for the years 2020 and prior, do not automatically qualify and must meet certain eligibility criteria under the, ‘Lift-sustaining Therapy’ section of the form, with the primary focus being on the amount of time spent performing activities related to care, although also includes additional criteria. Below is a list of the activities considered by the CRA.
-
- Administering and adjusting the dosage of medication
- Administering or receiving the therapy at home
- Attending appointments related to the therapy
- Determining the amount of a compound that can be safely consumed
- Maintaining a log related to the therapy
- Managing dietary restrictions or regimes related to therapy requiring a regular dosage of medication that needs to be adjusted on a daily basis
- Managing dietary restrictions or regimes related to therapy requiring daily consumption of a medical food or formula to limit intake of a particular compound
- Recuperating after therapy (if medically required)
- Setting up and maintaining equipment used for therapy
- Other activities (Note: activities that do not count include exercising, traveling to therapy, obtaining medication, attending appointments that do not involve the therapy, managing dietary restrictions or regimes other than in the situations described above)
